From the ages of 4-15 I was very involved in dance, both ballet and Scottish Highland. Doing this Cardio Barre workout was definitely a blast from the past.

What is a barre workout? Imagine a mix of ballet, Pilates, yoga, and strength training and you are starting to get the idea. Cardio barre is fast paced, low impact, total body fitness. Light weights here means 1-2 lbs, because you do a lot of reps and do them quickly. The coordination is a bit tricky at first, but just keep moving through, it will all come together eventually. Because I have a dance background this one was pretty easy to follow, but I am not sure that would have been the case otherwise.

Another barre favorite, perhaps better for those just starting out, is Barre3. They have a small selection on YouTube, but a huge selection available on the website for a small monthly streaming fee. When I was recovering from chronic tendonitis, these workouts were amazing. Just about every one has excellent modifications, clearly explaining to help people who have injuries or other problems.

Tip of the Week: Any workout is better than no workout. If you are just starting out, forming the exercise habit is a huge undertaking in and of itself. So if you just can’t muster the energy to do something intense, give yourself permission to do something restorative and gentle. Just getting up of the couch and moving is a worthy goal. As you start to feel better the intensity will probably pick up, but give yourself permission to be gentle and improve your health at the same time.

Recipe Recommendation: Southwest Cilantro Lime Salad

Encouraging Word:

Today will never come again. Be a blessing. Be a friend. Encourage someone. Take time to care. Let your words heal and not wound.
